Cufflinks have been around for quite some time and have played a rather important role in men’s wardrobes all that time. The famous, though some would say infamous, French cuff does not have any buttons, simply two holes on each cuff. The cufflinks were invented for the simple reason of linking two cuffs together. The simplest cufflinks design is intended to do just that. It consists of two parts, usually two discs that are linked together with a chain or some other piece that is threaded through the holes in the cuffs. Cufflinks collectors often have a wide range of different types of cufflinks that all work on this same basic principle but are different in a variety of ways.
Any cufflink collector’s collection will contain a wide variety of cufflinks with different styles, designs and mechanism. Most cufflinks are quite simple being made from a single material throughout that is both stylish and elegant at the same time. Others can be quite elaborate and can contain personalized monograms, gemstone inlays and even some interesting custom designs. There is some very unique one of a kind cufflinks that were designed by artists or designers to be worn by a celebrity of some sort for one evening only to be never worn again. Cufflinks for special occasions like coronations, 100 year celebrations and the like are also quite special and many collectors will go to great lengths to get their hands on them.
While not strictly cufflinks, many cufflink collectors may also have silk knots in their collection. Silk knots are alternatives to cufflinks that consist of a length of silk that is knotted on either end performing the same task as a standard cufflink. They are also sometimes known as monkey’s fists or Turks’ head knots. They are more common in Europe though today most silk knots are not made from silk and use elastic to keep the two ends together. Nevertheless they are a part of what could be considered cufflink history.
Cufflinks are still worn by many people today. Cufflink collectors still fill their collections with the odd, the interesting and even the ordinary. Cufflinks are a useful little device and also have the advantage of often being quite nice to look at as well. From the silk knot to the solid gold cufflink, there are innumerable different types to choose from.
